Viticulture: Bordeaux (expansion)
Like Tuscany, this expansion to Viticulture provides an alternative board with all four seasons instead of the two in the base game. The set-up adds cards to draft, rather than relying on luck, and there's a rather different wake-up table (the bonuses players get for choosing to be lower down the turn order). It also adds an extra mechanism: experts, who provide bonuses once deployed to a particular action. The changes all go towards the 10 design goals noted on the back page of the rules, including a faster start, shorter games and more agency for players.
I immediately noticed that the Bordeaux board has larger, clearer printing than the base game. In a clever touch, the flip side reproduces the base game's board, allowing you to substitute this board for the original so that this expansion fits into the box. There's also a revised version of the 'Automa' rules for solitaire play.
For 1-6 players (with base game), aged 14+, playing time 90-120 minutes
