I picked up this game after hearing good things about the first edition and was not disappointed. The delightful artwork is obviously an attraction and the fantasy setting - the land of Brighthelm - is entertaining, as are the stories you make on your quest for greatness.

The idea is that players are trying to prove their worthiness to become ruler of Brighthelm by demonstrating their Virtues (three out of the five possible will do it). This they do by travelling across the land, defeating dangerous creatures (dragons are top of the list), helping others, acquiring and giving away wealth, concocting efficacious recipes and more. With the help of their bird companion.

Okay, it's essentially a dungeon bash, despite being set in the countryside. And it's great fun, with a plethora of "equipment, quests, recipes, monsters, ingredients, encounters, cities, villages and more" (cards) that mean it's different every time.

For 1-4 players, aged 14+, playing time 60-90 minutes

Paupers' Ladder was designed by Paul Stapleton and published by his imprint, Bedsit Games.
