The players (Axis and Allies) are fighting over five wartime 'theatres', alternately deploying troops to swing the balance in their favour.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs each 'campaign' is completed, players score points if they have the lead in that theatre and the winner is the first to 25 points. Add in special actions (like 'bombing' your opponent to reduce the number of units they have available) and there's a lot to think about.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt's a really clever tactical game where you need to counter your opponent's moves while staying ahead in enough theatres. I now have the 2025 Floodgate re-print of the second edition with the polished rules and solitaire play (designed by Dávid Turczi).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eIt also includes the \u003cem\u003eNippon Expansion\u003c\/em\u003e – a war between the victorious Axis powers, Germany and Japan, across North America in 1946. If one player can control all the regions of England, they win outright; otherwise it's the player with most influence after five rounds (50 years of history).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a clever, subtle game that plays quickly and keeps your attention throughout. The second edition includes the Events cards that were originally published as an expansion to the first edition. It's also a game of two halves, the first part setting up the board for the second. Though it's perfectly possible for your opponent to wreck your preparations when it comes to actually playing the second half.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe aim is to get your buildings onto the board (carefully contained within the game's box) so that they are illuminated by Parisian street lights. However, you can only put your buildings on cobbled areas in your colour – or neutral. Hence the importance of the first half, which is when you lay cobblestone (and street light) tiles and grab buildings. But it's only in the second half that you score points and it's so easy to come unstuck!\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eI really enjoyed this game when I played it at Spiel '19 and it looks pretty as well.
