It's actually a development from his \u003cem\u003eGlass Road\u003c\/em\u003e from 2013. Thus, players are again 13th century glass-blowers in the Black Forest, producing their glass from local materials (mainly wood) and moving on every few years once they'd cleared the trees. This clearance in turn leads to the establishment of farms and communities in the area.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003ePlayers start with their own 'estate' with initial forested areas and their 'Glass hut' where glass is made. Their actions are governed by what's available in the village where their worker pawn is or moves to. Actions let them gain or expend resources, in particular to construct buildings that will give them more\/better actions. Players' resources are tracked on their two production dials, a neat mechanism that is one element carried over from Glass Road.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs you'd expect, there is a potentially-bewildering array of options available to players. In hope of returning home, they quest across this world (or pages of the atlas), encountering bizarre (and mundane) creatures, making deals, acquiring resources (mmm, food!) and discovering that all is not what it seems…\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eDistant Skies\u003c\/em\u003e has a different, card-based combat system from \u003cem\u003eSleeping Gods\u003c\/em\u003e (not all the natives are friendly… okay, make that not many of the natives are friendly!). This is almost a game in itself. And, like a role-playing game, it's designed to be played in 2-3 hour sessions as players work their way through a campaign. Nephew Tom and I had great fun playing through a campaign to a successful conclusion. Gradually Fortress cards come into play and you discover that it's all about capturing them, using the cards in your hand. Now, I do like a motor racing game, but deck management is not my favourite game mechanism. However, playing the game a few times has converted me.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAs you'd expect with a motor racing game, you have different tracks to race on with the key limiting factor being the maximum speed in the corners. Exceeding this means penalties. In this case, that's discarding the 'Heat' cards you start with and it gets serious when you run out.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe Heat cards go into your discard pile and eventually recycle into your hand. You then have to find a way of making them available again (going slowly is the obvious one) or they're just clogging up your hand.
