And all you do in a turn is play one from your hand. Then it gets a bit more complicated. Your card will go onto the end of a row and, if it's the sixth, you get the five already there. Plus the penalty points (little 'ox-head' icons) on them.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eNo matter how much you ponder over which card to play, it's going to go wrong – probably sooner rather than later. However, scoring may also include cards in hand, so players have some tricky interactions to deal with. The game only lasts nine rounds, too, so players need to get a move on.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eMy favourite bit, though, is that different cards (not just more) are added to the deck at the start of the game as the number of players increases. Thinking ahead is very necessary, but you do get the opportunity to trade beans with other players before adding cards to your hand.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe added dimension to the game is the humorous illustrations of the different beans. Thus, the black-eyed bean is a boxer with a black eye. There is some real complexity to this take on the Wars of the Roses. The players represent the noble houses of Lancaster (red rose) and York (white) as they compete militarily and politically for control of 15th century England. They play cards to gain influence and troops before meeting in a climactic battle each round.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe really clever bit is the dice-based bluffing mechanism (think Liars' Dice) that decides the battle, whittling away the troops until one side has left the field. If one player can control all the regions of England, they win outright; otherwise it's the player with most influence after five rounds (50 years of history).\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThis is a clever, subtle game that plays quickly and keeps your attention throughout. The second edition includes the Events cards that were originally published as an expansion to the first edition. Only if you challenge this do you roll dice to see if the BoT's bluffing or not! That's a clever little mechanism and leaves you playing the odds.
